Making Safety Child’s Play

The Challenge
Wood Group GTS required a building induction video for their facility in Dyce to help visitors and contractors stay safe while on site.

S2N Solution – Child’s Play
To really engage the audience, a genuinely fresh approach was required. SIGNAL2NOISE suggested telling the ‘induction story’ from the point of view of a young boy whose dad works for Wood Group. He leads the audience on a tour of the facility explaining how ‘grown ups’ stay safe.

The Thinking
By connecting the viewer with home, the concept reinforces the emotional consequences of accidents while the subtext suggests that if ‘kids’ can understand the importance of safety, then so can ‘grown ups’.

Making It Happen
Working closely with the client’s HSEQ team, a 5 minute script was developed. Auditions were held in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Aberdeen and 9 year old Zack McCullough was cast as ‘Jack’, for whom ‘junior’ PPE was specially made.

With lots of dialogue to Steadycam in a noisy environment, a highly experienced film crew was required. The 2-day shoot went very smoothly despite being next to Europe’s busiest heliport, while site disturbance was kept to a minimum.

iPad App
As a result of the film’s impact, Wood Group commissioned SIGNAL2NOISE to produce a bespoke iPad App to enable Visitors and Contractors to view the film as part of a more personalised, inter-active Induction experience.

The finished film was extremely well received by the HSEQ team and right across Wood Group.
